Referral and Eligibility
How to Access DVA Psychology Sessions
To access DVA-funded psychology sessions, you usually need a valid referral from your GP and a DVA White Card or Gold Card. Your referral helps confirm the reason for treatment and allows your psychologist to provide care under the DVA treatment cycle.
A DVA referral to an allied health provider, including a psychologist, generally lasts for up to 12 sessions or 1 year, whichever ends first. If ongoing treatment is clinically needed, your GP can review your progress and provide a new referral.
A DVA Gold Card may cover clinically necessary psychological treatment for all conditions. A DVA White Card may cover treatment for accepted conditions, and White Card holders may also be able to access mental health treatment under Non-Liability Health Care arrangements.
You can read more about psychology services, Veteran Card coverage, referrals, and treatment cycles on the Department of Veterans’ Affairs website .
Simple Steps to Get Started
1. Speak with your GP
Ask your GP whether a DVA psychology referral is suitable for your current mental health needs.
2. Confirm your referral details
Your GP can help confirm your DVA card details, treatment needs, and whether psychological therapy is clinically appropriate.
3. Book your appointment
Once your referral is ready, contact Wisemind & Body to book an appointment with a psychologist.

Veteran Mental Health and Wellbeing
When Should You Seek Support?
Many veterans and current serving ADF members are used to pushing through stress, pain, or emotional difficulty. While resilience can be a strength, it can also make it harder to notice when support is needed.
Speaking with a psychologist may be helpful if your mental health is affecting your sleep, mood, relationships, work, daily routine, or ability to feel calm and connected.
It May Be Time to Reach Out If You Notice:
- Persistent anxiety, panic, or feeling constantly on edge
- Nightmares, flashbacks, or intrusive memories
- Low mood, hopelessness, or loss of motivation
- Anger, irritability, or emotional shutdown
- Withdrawal from family, friends, or community
- Difficulty adjusting to civilian life after service
- Sleep problems or difficulty switching off
- Increased use of alcohol or other substances to cope
If you are at immediate risk of harm, call 000 or attend your nearest emergency department. You can also contact Lifeline on 13 11 14 or Open Arms on 1800 011 046 for crisis and veteran mental health support.
